Ground Inspection  Report

History:

Upton Athletic  Association are a relatively young club having only been formed during

1964 by Chester Youth leader, Arthur Pomistone and Curate, Perris Williams.

After joining the Chester and District League Fourth Division they made fairly

swift progress and by 1969 had reached Division One. In 1972/73 Upton won their first

Premier Division Championship before they settled at this higher level and had a short

period of consolidation.

The 1980's saw the Chester based outfit emerging as a dominant force inlocal area football.

Three successive titles from 1982/83, which also included league and cup doubles in both

1982/83 and 1984/85, helped with their successful attempt to join the West Cheshire League

in 1985-around the time they moved to the Cheshire County Officers Sports complex.

On the pitch the Chester Senior Cup virtually became the property of the club with 5

successive victories between 1985 and 1989, coupled with placings near the top of the table

their rise up the ladder took a step further with election to Division One in 1988.

Upton were enjoying a successful decade and whilst any progress in the County's Amateur Cup

competition was limited 1989/90 saw a good run.  This put them into the Semi-finals for the

first time where they lost 0-2 to Mid-Cheshire Leaguers Knutsford.

Life in Division One was difficult and Upton spent a number of seasons trying to avoid the

bottom places. During 1993/94 a long campaign ended with only three wins, although these

did include a 3-2 success at the eventual champions Cammell Laird. Inevitably relegation

did befall the club in 1995 and upon returning to the Second Division a determined bid for

promotion yielded a third place finish in 1995/96.

The last few seasons have seen Upton building for the future. A relatively young line-up has

seen some good football and some useful wins have demonstrated their potential.

This meant mid-table placings and limited progress in the various cup competitions until

2000/01 when they were well in contention for promotion before eventually having to settle

for fourth place. In 2001/02 Upton made a flying start but were unable to maintain this form

and occupied a mid-table position.

Uptons fortunes have see-sawed a bit since, with relegation to Division Two, but they

bounced back in 2006, with promotion once again to Division One, a year which saw the

opening of a new sports complex at their ground.

2008 - 2009 Runners up in West Cheshire Division 1. Losing finalists

in The Chester Senior Cup. Whilst Upton reserves won the West Cheshire

Shield.
